REDDIT the front page of the internet

Have you been on Reddit?

Have you been on Reddit?  If not you are missing out on a very entertaining forum based website where anyone can post, ask a question, or submit a link to interesting content from anywhere. The front page is constantly in motion filled with interesting any topic, links to photos and information on just about anything.  Just click on a subject line and away you go.  Any registered user is allowed to post, comment, up-vote or down-vote other posts.  The more up-votes a post receives, the higher visibility it will have on the site.

All the posts are organized by areas of interest called “subreddits” which appear on the top of the screen.

When you first sign up you have a set of default subreddits—each representing a community.  You can unsubscribe from any of the default subreddits at any time, and you can subscribe to any one of the thousands of other subreddits available. The most popular ranked subreddits “funny” “picts” “todayilearned” & “Aww have millions of subscribers.

My favourite is “AMA” (Ask Me Anything), a very popular forum for discussion on pretty much anything.  On this subreddit anyone can post who they are, what they did or what they currently do then users ask them questions.  Reddit posts both the questions and the answers; similar to a press conference, but online.  The top AMA,  I am Barack Obama, President of the United States — AMA has thousands and thousands of comments.

Celebrities use Reddit to promote their brand and projects. The AMA remains on the site long after the discussion is over. Robin Williams. It’s time for a convoluted stream of consciousness. Ask Me Anything!

Hello reddit. Welcome! Nice to be here.

I am ready now for your questions. First time caller? Yes or no.

What are you wearing?

No, but seriously, I am excited to be here and exploring this medium (Victoria from reddit is helping me too). I feel like somewhat like an Amish tech rep. You guys know me and grew up with me… from Mork & Mindy to Dead Poets Society to World’s Greatest Dad to Aladdin, Happy Feet, Mrs. Doubtfire, Goodwill Hunting, One Hour Photo (for those that want to be creeped out), The Fisher King…My latest project is called The Crazy Ones (http://www.cbs.com/shows/the-crazy-ones) and it airs tomorrow at 9 PM eastern on CBS.

Ask me anything. Our lines are open.

Edit: Thank you for an INCREDIBLE session. This was really a lot of fun. And saved me a lot of therapy time. I hope to come back.

It’s not all politics and celebrities. Reddit is a huge forum with millions of users.  Post topics that stimulate discussion can be as obscure as—  I was mauled by a bear, fought it off, and drove 4 miles down a mountain with my face hanging off. AMA
“Hello, my name is Allena Hansen. In 2008 while I was working on my isolated mountain property, I was mauled by a predatory black bear. Saved by my thumbnail and my two faithful ranch dogs, I hiked out of a box canyon and drove myself four miles down a rutted logging road to our little rural fire station from which I was airlifted to UCLA Medical Center. There I underwent eight hours of emergency surgery and survived the subsequent onslaught of LA reality television’s media hounds. Five years and a dozen surgeries later, I’m back to some semblance of my original self.”

Reddit is fantastic tool for exploring but in my view it’s culture of free speech comes with a cost. After Reddit was found to be one of the major hubs for distributing celebrity nude photos, Yishan Wong, Reddit’s chief executive told the New York Times,

“We uphold the ideal of free speech on Reddit as much as possible not because we are legally bound to,” said Yishan Wong, Reddit’s chief executive, but because the company believes that the user “has the right to choose between right and wrong, good and evil,” and that it is the user’s responsibility to do so. His company blog post was titled “Every Man Is Responsible for His Own Soul.”
Some posts do contain defamatory content and can be perceived as offensive depending on who’s viewing it.  Reddit’s few rules; no spamming, no cheating, no personal info, nothing illegal, no interfering the site’s functions and no suggestive or sexual content featuring minors opens the door to the grisly, naked, private, even video of death—things that you can’t “unsee” if you accidentally come upon it—I feel is too liberal.  There are moderators but each community has its own set of users with its own set of rules. One way I avoid accessing what is offensive to me is by not subscribing to the “random” subreddit.

All in all the site is great.  Although the average user is reported to be a “millennial” there is plenty there for us “boomers” too.  I know it’s cliché but subreddits like “OldSchoolCool” and forums on Jazz are right up my alley.

Hmm. Maybe we should start our own subreddit and call it Over60?
